Another week, another forty. This week Chanel launched their campaign for Coco Crush and with it, a collaboration with Jamie xx so obviously my entire soul was lifted considering Jamie gives us new music… once every millennium. The music video is a fun little fashion take on musical chairs. To make matters even worse, the xx announced they are in the studio again so to potentially get a new Jamie album this year and another xx album next year is basically Christmas all over again.
Jamie is amazing at finding new sounds — blips and loops and squeaks that manifest into a driving Brazilian-in-feel rhythm. As I started to listen, I could hear everything and it all ticked my brain quite a bit. I was going to do a forty dedicated to this seasons film scores (maybe another week near the Oscars) but instead felt really inspired to dive into music that really licks the brain.
The playlist kicks off with Jamie and lingers in dance music including a great new track by Anish Kumar from his recently atmospheric album In Sri Lanka, as well as some tracks from Boston Bun, Douvelle19, and Andras & Oscar Key Sung. I’ve been also really into high BPM tracks lately so love ‘okok’ by okgiorgio — all very cinematically 90’s like a cut song from ‘Hackers’ and all the tracks from the EP are a comically escalating “ok”.
Then cut up the BPM with some Señor Coconut and Player to gear shift into some other genres. Really love some of artists I stumbled upon like the all girl group The Last Dinner Party, Poté, and Abby Sage, each with a really unique sound particularly Abby Sage’s voice.
Midway through I return some dance tracks including the new Channel Tres track and a newish banger called ‘Orange Glow’ by Le Boom which really had me grooving this week… love the hyper speed repeating vocals, the space like synths, the driving beat and I’m always a sucker for talking with a beat. I love the brand spankin’ new track by Bad Snacks called ‘iiwannabe’ — really great almost bossa nova like rhythm and some dreamy reverby vocals.
I take things back to a more mellow tone towards the end with tracks by sir Was, alt country artist Low Pony (fantastic voice), and Chicago indie duo, Friko.
It took me a second but I was finally able to track down the song they use in the trailer for ‘All Of Us Strangers’ which oddly enough is not on the soundtrack or score. It’s called ‘Hum’ by Jasha Klebe and its marvelous. Randomly found a track called ‘Hum Hum’ by Troublemakers to finish it out after and it’s a perfect little brain tickle.
Till we meet again <3
